"Save your sister" Country girl Ai Otori joins the game company where her sister works. There her story of love, mystery, and game-making begins. Yumeutsutsu Re:Master is a girls-love adventure game set in a small japanese game studio.
The story is set in the town of Koenji, not far from the imperial capital of Tokyo, where a small game studio called Eureka Soft has set up shop. The heroine Ai, a country girl, joins her sister Kokoro who works there, after receiving a mysterious email from studio head. There she meets the quirky all-girl (and a dog) cast: the big sisterly head of the studio, her sister, giving her a cold shoulder, the maid/voice talent, the "tiny dinosaur" scenarist, the uniformed artist, and Banako, the dog and vice-president.
Ai starts learning about game making as she slowly pieces together the mysteries of her colleagues. Ai's world will expand bit by bit, as the game production begins.
Regardless of which ending is first discovered, Yumetsutsu Re:Master is a fascinating visual novel that throws light on life within the gaming industry and the complicated relationship of two sisters. The hours spent lost in the tale are rewarded with a gallery of scenes and a few videos to collect which necessitates further play, an act that will not become boring with the mystery of whether the sisters will reunite in the best ending to aim for.
Kogado is perhaps the most under-appreciated visual novel outfit out there. You've almost certainly only heard of this developer's work if you're deep into the visual novel space, and while in terms of presentation there's a distinct "low budget" quality, there are two things that help to set Kogado apart: firstly, they're a gorgeous application of the idea that aesthetics are more important in art than technical wizardry. Secondly, Kogado tells stories that are an impeccable blend of tantilising fan service, intense mystery, and subversion to keep players on their toes as far as expectations go. On that basis Yumetsutsu is a perfect follow on to the Nurse Love series.
Yumeutsutsu Re:Master is easily worth your time with its multiple endings if you enjoy long visual novels.
Yumeutsutsu Re:Masters has the makings of a fantastic visual novel, and visually it is. Still, some horrible choices in both writing and design make it an utter chore to experience.
