The towering factory complex of Steeltown manufactures all the tech that keeps Colorado running and the Patriarch in powerâtrucks, armor, weapons, and robots. But deliveries from Steeltown have stopped cold, and all the Patriarch is getting from Abigail MarkhamâSteeltown's leaderâare excuses. When he sends the Rangers to investigate, they find the place is a powder keg with the fuse already lit.
The workers are striking, bandits raid with impunity, and nobody is allowed through the gates, not even on the business of the Patriarch. Without help, Steeltown could crash and burn for good, and take Markham with itâbut maybe that's just what it needs. The Rangers will have to decide that for themselves.
Wasteland 3: The Battle of Steeltown DLC is a very nice complement to the main game. The story contained in the expansion pack is of the same caliber as what's in the main campaign, but it also does a great job of slotting itself into the campaign without feeling like a huge diversion. The environment is fresh, and the enemies are enjoyable to fight, especially those on mechs, but the gameplay mechanics introduced here and in the previous patches give Wasteland 3 veterans enough of a reason to return and try another run. It's good enough that we want to see what the next expansion looks like.
With a new engaging story nicely integrated with the main campaign, excellent writing, and new combat mechanics, Wasteland 3: The Battle of Steeltown is a more than worthy purchase for all those who have loved the game. The new campaign's high challenge level and relatively short length of the main quest may put some off, but, everything considered, The Battle of Steeltown is the perfect continuation of an already excellent experience.
Quotation forthcoming.
Wasteland 3: The Battle of Steeltown has a few notable flaws, and it's also a fairly short romp. However, there's enough content and tactical depth to make you want to keep adventuring in this post-apocalyptic landscape.
A fine DLC that adds some more hours of solid Wasteland 3 content, with the usual mixture of tactical combat, open-ended gameplay and more than a few choices that can alter the story. It's not flawless, nor is it the most ambitious expansion ever made, but if you're looking for an excuse to come back to the frozen wastelands of Colorado, The Battle of Steeltown can provide another 7-8 hours of good content.
The first story DLC for the truly great RPG is simply okay. Wasteland fans will enjoy the new adventure, although it isnât long (6-7 hours) and offers almost nothing you havenât already seen in the base game. Be aware that you canât play this DLC after completing the original story â you either need a save you made before âthe point of no returnâ, or you have to start over and reach at least level 9. What a nonsense! [08/2021, p.46]
Thankfully, the humorous writing is still there and I will admit that Wasteland 3: The Battle of Steeltown got a few chuckles out of me. The environment and models for the area also look awesome, and the unique flair of folk-tunes makes a great return (I just wish there was more). Overall, Battle of Steeltown is decent but if you are a Wasteland fan, I would recommend you wait for a sale to pick this one up.
