As evil megatron closes in on the all spark, bumblebee and the autobots need a new Commander to help save Earth - you! Assemble your squad and roll out for a battle that will Rage from Central city to cybertron… And even to the local multiplayer arcade.
Transformers Battlegrounds is a great entry point into turn-based strategy game for younger Transformers fans, and even older fans looking for a more relaxed XCOM-style experience.
A range of mission objectives keeps things interesting, and there are nice moments when the action is used to tell the story.2 It’s fairly simple (it’s based on a kids’ cartoon), but this twist on the genre is easy to understand, and fun to stick with until the credits. [Issue#182, p.160]
The part of me that was looking for an engaging turn based tactics experience is disappointed in what Transformers: Battlegrounds has on offer though. It’s too bad the game doesn’t deliver a moderately higher level of challenge or complexity, because it does have the basic elements in place that it needed to do just that. In its current state, it’s a moderately enjoyable but largely forgettable game.
When the game is fun – it’s a hoot, when it isn’t fun – it’s tedious… and when it isn’t tedious, it’s downright boring. Somewhat worth a play, but measure your price accordingly to ensure you get the right return on investment.
