Off the Rails lives up to its name with 20 death-defying rides so outrageous, they inspire the same word from every park visitor who sees them: "WHOA!" Players build these incredible "WHOA Coasters" to leap from one track to another, launch through the air like cannonballs, blast through a burning rings of fire and more. A new lighthearted story ties together more than 100 missions, complete with 34 playable multiplayer theme-park games and social interaction with park guests that's better than ever. The in-depth conversations both advance the plot and suggest better ways to manage the park.
But is every guest to be trusted?.
I was very pleasantly surprised by Thrillville: Off the Rails. Sure it's a family-oriented game, but it was so fun that its kid-friendly nature did not hinder it in the slightest from being fun for gamers of all ages.
If the game's structure sounds like it would appeal to you, consider giving it a try because (for the most part) the pros outweigh the cons.
The PC version is sometimes difficult to control (the mouse is severely underused, and you’re not given any options for redefining hotkeys), but the game itself is bright and happy and optimistic, it’s well made, and it includes enough content to be well worth its $30 suggested retail price.
If you really want to run a park and be that altruistic owner that wanders amongst the crowds to know about every detail then you might have a bit of gold in here.
While Thrillville is decent, disposable fun for kids, anyone in their teens will want more depth. [Christmas 2007, p.68]
Design and build your own roller coaster? Sounds cool, but even making money on it is hundredfold less exciting than riding one. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun... unfortunately only the first time you play it. Then it becomes repetitive and boring until you get to the missions. Well, having a challenge always helps. [Dec 2007]
While some elements are playable and, occasionally, fun, this mixture of Fisher-Price "Theme Park" and a bunch of Flash-esque minigames isn't recommendable in the slightest. [Jan 2008, p.73]
