Sumo have made some stellar efforts in the past, but Team Sonic Racing is, needless to say, their best effort by far. What’s here is a love letter to all things Sonic, not just in character variation, but stage design, audio presentation, and much more besides. Despite some online teething issues, some questionable AI behavior, and the odd poor design choice, you’ll not find a better kart racer this side of a Nintendo system.
Team Sonic Racing sports the classic kart racer gameplay but with an added layer of tactics due to the new team play mechanics. It's less varied and modern than Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, but thanks to many gaming options and contents and a great technical production it can definitely be considered one of the best kart racers around.
Under this cartoony hood is actually a competent kart racer. Team Sonic Racing feels good to take for a spin, and there is enough packed in for a longer drive as well. The tracks are all varied enough, the cars feel really good to drive and Team Adventure is a decent Sonic story, if presented a little poorly.
Team Sonic Racing offers a satisfactory experience. If you love Mario Kart 8 and want something on Xbox One, the game should satisfy you in the interim. However, you might want to wait for another, better game like Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.
A decent but forgettable kart racer that’s lacking the variety of All-Stars Racing. [Issue#179, p.83]
At the end of the day, Team Sonic Racing isn’t exactly the game I was hoping it would be, nor is it incredibly close. It’s a good, very competent and fun kart racer, but it doesn’t have as much content or as much of a wow factor as the two incredible games that preceded it. Still, I don’t want to sound as if I don’t like this game or think it’s above average, because I do. It's a good, competent racing game, but doesn't have the wow factor or staying power that I was hoping for.
Team Sonic Racing is a solid kart racer that suffers from a boring roster of characters, and an unbalanced difficulty that doesn't seem fit for anyone.
