Assume the role of Franklin Fargo, an unassuming physics professor who has led a bitter existence ever since his fiancée died in a holdup in which he was intended to be the victim. One morning, he wakes up in the middle of an abandoned scientific facility. His only link with the outside world is a voice that calls him "Subject 13".
The feeling Subject 13 finally leaves is that it meets the expectations of its 647 backers, as well as those of anybody else who has previously played one of Cuisset's games. It may not be the adventure game that will charm the majority of casual gamers, nor the one that mainstream reviewers will appreciate, but it's dedicated to true fans of the genre, due to the smart and difficult enough puzzles it includes. It won't disappoint them.
Subject 13 as a whole is thoughtfully challenging. I can see it working really well for casual and hardcore puzzle fans alike as it intermingles timeless puzzles with original concepts. Despite the storyline having some slightly cheesy and generic moments, it was intriguing enough to keep me interested and engaged.
The narrative is interesting, the puzzles are fun to tackle, if a little too simple and yet, if there was just a lot more content and if everything was a little more polished, we would be looking at a great game heavy with recommendation, rather than a good one laden with caveats.
It could be a suspenseful mystery adventure. But then the old-fashioned puzzles and weak storytelling get in the way.
While there are plenty of familiar puzzles to keep players occupied, Subject 13‘s mediocre plot and characterization can’t elevate the experience to the well-rounded adventure it had the potential to be.
An old style adventures that will captivate casual gamers but that cannot compete with the classics: Paul Cuisset signature led to higher expectations.
It’s a good thing that Subject 13 is astonishingly short, otherwise we could have had another Moebius on our hands. The game could have won people over with its story, but the writer had given up halfway through, and the rest is just not worth your time.
