Splatter enemies and claim your turf as the ink-spewing, squid-like characters called Inklings in Nintendo's new third-person action shooter game exclusively on Wii U. Strategy is everything. Defeat enemies to splatter them in an explosion of ink, covering more turf for your team.
But choose wisely: Players who only go after the enemy might find their turf redecorated in their enemies' colours. Covering more territory with ink unlocks powered-up super weapons that can be used to attack rivals or cover more turf. See where you've splattered—and what to cover next—on the Wii U GamePad controller's screen.
Transform into a squid to hide in your own ink, climb up walls, and move more quickly. Use ink blasters, ink bombs, ink rollers, and squid power to cover the most territory. Customise your Inkling with different weapons and gear, complete with unique gameplay perks.
Challenge players online* in chaotic 4-on-4 turf wars and unleash squid powers to ink your way to victory. May the best mess win. Take on the evil octopus army in single-player mode, splatter octopi, solve ink puzzles and beat bosses! Features: Team up and take on other teams in an action-filled battle to cover the level with as much ink as possible.
Spray walls to access hard-to-reach areas. Covering more territory with ink unlocks powered-up super weapons that can be used to attack rivals or cover more turf. Strategy is everything.
Defeat enemies to splatter them in an explosion of ink, covering more turf for your team. But choose wisely: Players who only go after the enemy might find their turf redecorated in their enemies' colors. Refill ink tanks, hide from opponents or move faster by turning into a squid and diving into the ink with the tap of a button.
Select between multiple control options on the Wii U GamePad controller, including using gyroscopic controls to look around, allowing for better aiming and control. Hop online and battle in four-on-four matches.
There’s nothing else quite like it, nor the cathartic dopamine jolt to be had when you squid-skim up a paint-smeared quarter pipe, an Inkzooka at the ready, leap over the edge, take aim with your weapon, and reduce a startled opponent to goo.
Overall, Splatoon makes for an amazing online game, likely the most engaging online experience Nintendo has ever made.
The shooter transformed, but with enough initial problems to stop it short of classic status. [Aug 2015, p.60]
While Splatoon isn't quite the revelation some were hoping for, it's stupidly fun. The only concern is longevity, with the brief single-player and only two main modes to play online.
Splatoon is a colorful and fun addition to the action genre, that managed to entertain both the hardcore and the casual gamer. The online solution may need some work, but in any other way this is one of the best game for the Wii U.
The core gameplay is refreshing and enjoyable but limited in weird ways. [Jul 2015, p.065]
The lack of a chat feature just ends up making Splatoon a game that rewards smart teamwork but doesn’t give players tools to communicate.
