Semblance is an innovative platformer with deformable terrain, set in a beautiful minimalist world. It’s a game that asks, what if you could deform and reshape the world itself? Semblance PC takes the idea of a ‘platform’ in a platformer and turns it on its head.
I love the design, the puzzles are challenging but not mind-breaking, and the controls are tight and easy to pick up. I only wish there was a bit more content here.
A challenging puzzle platformer with excellent level design and art style.
I love that Semblance is challenging, and its presentation is lovely as well. It has a unique look, full of organic shapes and eye-catching colors. Though it’s light on story, it’s worth dying a few dozen times to experience.
Semblance is a charming platformer with a very unique concept and very well executed. It has some flaws, but it’s a game fans of the genre should, at least, try.
There are plenty of things Semblance does well: It adds new mechanics as you progress, forcing you to strategize attempts to reach an Essence; it maintains an overall a casual experience while gradually increasing the difficulty; and it has a great atmospheric visual style. A great pick if you’re looking for a quick, neat platforming fix.
Semblance’s ace up the sleeve and key mechanic is the ability to deform environment, and in my opinion it does not work ideally in a puzzle game. I often felt like I was cheating, as if I forced a cubic block into a round hole in a kids’ shape sorter, and it fit, because it was flexible enough. This feeling often robbed me of satisfaction one should derive from solving a puzzle. [10/2018, p.50]
A delightful reshaping of the puzzle platformer. [Issue#204, p.76]
