PositronX is a first-person shooter with high doses of strategy but frantic combat. The main feature of this title, in addition to the fun fights in which we will have to show off our skills, is that we have countless different combinations of weapons, implants and upgrades for our character. There are dozens of implants to use in PositronX PC and they can totally change the way our character plays.
Time can be slowed down, we can stop bullets and send them back to our enemies, stop and rewind time, we can fly, jump over walls or teleport; space can be crossed in an instant. The combination of all these types of unique skills is what gives PositronX one of the most dynamic and fun fighting systems. Â We have a progression system with dozens of implants (fully upgradeable skills that your character can acquire, each with its own modifiers) A dozen weapons to choose from (each with two very different shooting modes, each with its own modifier) Dozens of Impressions to customize your character and hundreds of updates to enhance it.
All in all PositronX is a delightful game about destroying killer robots as a killer robot in a constantly shifting labyrinth of high-tech labs, all while growing stronger and acquiring excessive weaponry. And really, what more could a gamer want?
PositronX has a good set of first-person shooter mechanics, equal to anything that the classics have to offer. Finding a good combination of weapons and powers to clear levels is a great experience. But, despite the procedural generation, once the game progresses, runs become too similar to one another for long-term engagement. The game also lacks much in terms of story to keep one interested. The fact that PositronX also lacks multiplayer, or the suggestion that it might be added in the future, also means that a game with instant appeal cannot convert its strong opening into long-term loyalty.
PositronX starts off as an amazing FPS game that’s marketed as a rogue-lite, but players will quickly realize that it’s more attuned to being a roguelike. Progressing through the four levels and it’s quickly evident that a high level of artificial difficulty is added, with enemies getting more health and damage, while you’re stuck with abilities and bonuses that don’t scale accurately against the rest of the gameplay. The game ends up becoming a grindy mess with its only salvation being the music design and the occasional new weapon or ability for the player to experience.
Overall, I think PositronX, despite currently being very average, has the framework necessary to become something greater with some added touches and fixes. During early access the game received plenty of updates but perhaps it’s time to go back to basics and look to improve those key elements that make a successful FPS game to keep you coming back for more.
PositronX feels as if stuck in that awkward game development phase where the title is ready… but also isn't. In other words, it feels as if it wasn't sufficiently tested in order to make sure that, apart from being a working product, it's also a fun product. As a whole, a pretty average rogue-lite FPS.
