In the year 20XX AD, Tokyo is nothing but a dystopic wasteland overrun by living corpses known as the Undead. Here we find two sisters who descend from a long line of expert swordsmen, yet were born to different mothers. The elder sister, Aya, was raised by her father, who subjected her to rigorous training in the way of the blade.
Meanwhile, the younger sister, Saki, was raised by her mother, learning to despise her father for abandoning them and taking her sister away. When her father goes missing, Aya decides to put her skills with the sword to use as an Undead-hunter. Upon her beloved mother's murder, Saki becomes consumed to the point of insanity with a desperate thirst for revenge, resorting to manipulating the Undead to achieve her goal.
Aya resolves to seek out her younger sister, her only surviving relation, while Saki is determined to resurrect her mother using an ancient art passed down through the ages. This art, however, requires the heart of a blood relative to work, meaning that the younger sister must kill the elder if she is to have her sworn vengeance. And so, amidst a swirling storm of love, hate, and intrigue, the battle between the two sisters begins.
Onee Chanbara ORIGIN is also available on PS4.
Maybe itâs a bit too pricey for what itâs about, but what else can I do but surrender to its charms? If you have problems with fast women and beautiful action, though, steer away from the game. For others, itâs a short and sweet action piece that perhaps surprisingly has even a tad more depth than before.
Onee Chanbara Origin exudes B Movie energy in its every element, giving players a quick, aggressive, fun, and ridiculous action game to work through.
Onee Chanbara Origin is a serviceable remake of a couple classic PS2 titles. Developer Tamsoft does a great job giving the games a visual makeover and a much more modern feel. Combat is solid, though a bit basic at times. The experience is also bogged down at times by some performance problems. That aside, and Onee Chanbara is a worthwhile remake of a fun and unique story.
Onee Chanbara Origin is a hack-and-slash that does nothing more than any other hack-and-slash available. Itâs best moments are the fluid and fast action when youâre cutting through hordes of enemies at a smooth frame rate with oceans of blood spraying all over. The series seems to be having an identity crisis about how it wants to continue. It needs to make a choice, keep the bikinis and have a bit of more campy fun with these characters, or lose them entirely and create a more polished action experience.
For players willing to put in the time to learn its subtleties, Onee Chanbara Origin has great combat, and sundering my way through crowds of zombies simply never got old. That said, thereâs just not enough here to make it feel like a complete experience. While the game certainly displays everything that made the franchise into such a long-running success, I canât help but feel that this anniversary celebration should have offered more to its fans.
The basic hack-and-slash formula it has seems fun, and you can understand why this went on to spawn sequels and so forth. Sure, itâs schlocky cheesecake action, but thatâs exactly what it wants to be and thatâs to its credit. Alas⊠I canât really recommend this game because those technical issues are notable. Theyâre not ârender the game unplayableâ bad, although the experience was probably diminished for me. But for all I know I wasnât the unlucky one but one of the lucky ones. I want to like this game. I repeatedly come close to liking this game. And Iâm probably rating it highly given the technical issues. But those technical issues mean that for any and all of its virtues, the game ultimately fails that basic test of âis this fully playable.â If the issues are fixed in a launch patch, toss on another point to the score.
While the gameplay itself is competent, this is short, shallow game with very little enemy variety, poor level design, and some egregious price-gouging.
