Neverending Nightmares is a psychological horror game inspired by the developer's actual battle with mental illness. In the game, you take on the role of Thomas who awakens from a terrible nightmare only to find that he is still dreaming. As he descends deeper through the layers of hellish dreamscapes, he must hide from horrifying apparitions and outrun his inner demons.
He must discover which of the horrors he encounters are a manifestation of his own psychological state and figure out what reality will be when he finally wakes up.
While I do believe some players may dismiss the game as a âwalking simulatorâ (as they are wont to do nowadays), Neverending Nightmares falls into the must-play section of the horror genre. Whether or not you find it scary, youâll definitely be disturbed and intrigued as you seek resolution to the madness.
A true proto-gothic horror piece, Neverending Nightmares feels like a hellish walk through an unpublished Edgar Allan Poe short story. The excellent sound design and unsettling, stylized visuals provide an experience that will linger with the player long after the end credits have rolled.
Neverending Nightmares is an emotionally resonant experience. I felt fully empathetic towards Thomasâ struggles, which is an impressive feat. The limited interactivity holds it back from taking full advantage of its medium, but I understood and was affected by Thomasâ inescapable depression.
The illusion it maintains is easily broken by the lack of interactivity and a plot that doesn't always manage to keep its hooks in you. Where and when Neverending Nightmares fails, the effects are noticeable and jarring. Still, Neverending Nightmares is an atypical horror experience and, when it succeeds, it's one you won't soon forget.
Having slept on it, I find myself obsessing over the questions raised, and the imagery foisted upon me by the encroaching darkness, than I have with any game in recent memory.
It's rough around the edges, and gameplay is really thin, but the terrifying experience ultimately works.
Neverending Nightmares is a heavily scripted walk through a weird museum rather than a game. Even encountering monsters feels mundane here.
