Felix works at The Ministry of Death and is in love with Betty The Maiden from The Ministry of Life. He believes that going to the human world as a field reaper will enable him to one day meet her. Hence he’s taken the job of making sure people die — and taught himself to dance to impress the love of his life.
Felix the Reaper is a surprisingly creative and entertaining 3D puzzle game that has an uncanny way of twisting dark humor and romance. If challenging puzzles with a nice background story are your thing, you can find Felix the Reaper on Steam on October 17th.
While it has its occasional little issues here and there, Felix the Reaper stands out as one of the year’s best puzzlers. Felix himself may easily lure you in with his charming appearance and cute design, along with a colorful world that he inhabits full of morbid humor and terrific music, but once you’re in, you’ll find a highly challenging game with superb, rewarding gameplay that will have you tearing out your hair one minute and cheering in delight the next, like any good puzzle game that puts up a fight. If death should indeed be considered a joyous occasion, then Felix appropriately brings along one delightful party via his game.
Felix starts dancing and, suddenly, you want to stand up and dance too. Felix the Reaper has style, and some challenging puzzles, but unfortunately the two sides never collide. Nevertheless, a solid performance by our dancing reaper (and his developers too).
The result is a well-made puzzle game that, thanks to the two levels of difficulty, is suitable for both experts and newcomers.
Felix the Reaper is a challenging puzzle game that is supposed to be a romantic comedy about life and death, but for some reason leaves the romance and some of the comedy aspects out of almost the entire game.
Felix the Reaper at times leans into its quirky and unique art style. However, the biggest disconnect comes with the effort to unify this with gameplay. Puzzles often feel like a grind, leaving little mastery when all things are said and done.
It’s a quite nice puzzle game with a quirky character and visual design but also which doesn’t actually stand out in any meaningful way. [01/2020, p.74]
