From Turtle Rock Studios, creators of Left 4 Dead, comes Evolve, a unique 4v1 shooter where four Hunters face off against a single, player-controlled Monster in adrenaline-pumping matches. Play as the Monster to use savage abilities and an animalistic sense to kill your human enemies, or choose one of four Hunter classes (Trapper, Support, Assault, and Medic) and team up to take down the beast on the planet Shear, where flora and fauna act as an adversary to Hunter and Monster alike. Evolve PS4 includes three Monsters, 12 Hunters, 16 maps, and four game modes: Hunt, Nest, Rescue, and Defend.
Evolve also features Evacuation, an experience that uniquely combines the full array of maps, modes, Hunters, and Monsters in a dynamic experience that is different every time you play. Players choose a side, Monster or Hunter, and play through a series of five matches across all maps and modes in the game, with each victory or loss directly impacting the remaining matches in Evacuation with benefits to either the hunter or monster side. Each additional play through of Evacuation results in different combinations of mission types, environments, and map affects, totaling over 800,000 possible combinations.
Because Evacuation includes every element of Evolve in one dynamic, unique package, it is highly replayable as a multiplayer, cooperative, and solo experience. Playing Evolve Solo All of Evolve’s content is playable solo and offline, and Evacuation is the best example of how to enjoy Evolve as a solo experience. Because Evacuation includes all of the elements in Evolve in one dynamic, unique package, it is the ideal way experience everything the game has to offer playing solo as either the Monster or as the Hunters.
Game Modes Hunt - Hunters are called in to eliminate a single Monster. The Monster flees, kills wildlife, and eats to gain energy and stage up. The Hunters aim to track, trap and kill the monster before it gets too big.
The round ends when one team is eliminated, or the Monster evolves to Stage Three and destroys the power relay. Nest - The Hunters have been called in to destroy Monster eggs that have been discovered in the area. The Alpha Monster must defend the eggs and can even hatch one to gain a Goliath minion to fight at its side.
The round ends when one team is eliminated, or all of the eggs and minion are destroyed. Rescue - The Hunters are called in for a search and rescue mission. A Monster has attacked the facility and is still in the area, and groups of colonists have fled into the wilderness.
Hunters need to locate, revive and lead each group of survivors to a rescue shuttle. The round ends when the majority of survivors have been either rescued or killed. Defend - The transport ship is loaded with civilians and fueling up.
A horde of Goliath minions led by a Stage 3 Alpha Monster attempts to destroy the fuel pad, which is protected by two reinforced walls, each powered by a generator. The hunters defend the generators and fuel pad until the ship can finish fueling. If the ship finishes fueling or the Alpha Monster is killed, the Hunters win.
If the generators and fuel pad are destroyed, the Monster wins. Maps Evolve will ship with 16 different maps that span four unique biomes: forest, desert, acid and ice. 12 of these maps can be played in Hunt, Nest, and Rescue modes.
Four additional maps were built specifically for Defend mode. Monsters Goliath is a physically imposing, strong and aggressive biped with the ability to leap great distances and climb just about any object in Shear. Goliath’s attacks take advantage of its physicality and include fire breath and rock throw as well as both a leap and charge attack.
Kraken is a ranged monster, able to unleash calculated attacks from both ground and air. Using aerial abilities to levitate and fly makes Kraken especially deadly, but dangerous melee combos also make Kraken formidable on the ground. As a master of dark energy, Kraken fights the hunters with bolts of lightning, banshee mines, an aftershock attack, and forceful vortex waves to inflict maximum devastation.
Wraith is a small, stealthy assassin that is quick in her movements and has two exceptionally long blades to deal damage up close. Despite having the least amount of health and armor among Evolve’s Monsters, her quick, warping movements allow her to quickly dart around during battle to avoid taking damage. Wraith utilizes a warp blast, deploys a dangerous decoy, can abduct individual Hunters, and can create a supernova arena to unleash frenzied melees.
Features: 4v1 – Grab three friends and hunt the monster or stalk the humans as the evolving beast. Whichever side you choose, you will have access to powerful weapons and abilities that deliver balanced, competitive gameplay. Hunt Together or Die Alone – Choose a hunter that fits your play style.
Whether you play as the Trapper, Support, Assault, or Medic, every role is vital and teamwork is key in surviving an encounter with the monster. Beast of Prey – As the monster – the lone predator – you are the boss battle. Use savage abilities and an animalistic sense to wreak havoc, kill the humans and prove you are the dominant species.
Savage Planet – Neither flora nor fauna are friendly on planet Shear. Fall victim to natural hazards or use them strategically against your prey. Character Customisation – Level up to unlock new upgrades, skins and perks for your favourite class: hunter or monster.
Earn your infamy on the leader boards and become the apex predator.
Overall it is hard not to be impressed with what Turtle Rock have achieved here, as Evolve is truly unlike anything available at the moment. Its no-nonsense approach is a breath of fresh air, and while the steep learning curve may force some gamers out of the loop early, those who remain will help form the core experience of the game in the months to come - a version of natural selection if you will.
With its balanced class-based, teamwork orientated gameplay, great graphics and slick mechanics that keep you playing into the wee hours of the night, Evolve itches that competitive urge and feels a lot more evolved that your standard, run-of-the-mill shooter.
Evolve has nice graphics and atmosphere, but you may be bored because of long matchmaking times and some bugs. Nevertheless, it is quite fun to play with friends.
Evolve is, in the ideal environment, enjoyable, a game that offers a really interesting experience. However, that environment is hard to attain and weighs down a risky idea, where we miss more content in the form of game modes and where solo mode is, in short, unnecessary.
Evolve has a hint of greatness, but a lack of content at launch and a jarring amount of premium launch and planned DLC hold it back. What we have here is an evolution of the Left 4 Dead formula, not a revolution.
Evolve has rare highs hidden amongst tedious lows. When the title hits its stride, it is easy to see why it was designed in this way
No actual campaign and focus on four players and one monster feels fresh only for a while. Currently, the constant repetition simply becomes boring, and interesting content fills only a couple of evenings.
