As you go through the game, you choose from a variety of play styles that enable you to earn promotions, make slanderous statements against others, hone your skills as a warrior, and more. There are also more personal pursuits, such as developing your officer's abilities or getting married and having children, as well as more kingdom-based activities such as the retirement and succession of rulers. All of these actions provide their own unique situations and drama, thereby creating a completely original and personalized Three Kingdoms experience.

Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires is a fun title on the XBox One but a little repetitive and is also showing its age.
Fans may enjoy the fast-paced action and emphasis on character building, but everybody else will be left scratching their heads at the outdated graphics and repetitive gameplay.
The hack and slash side really can get repetitive while the strategy element is, for the unprepared, is downright scary.
Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires feels about as much of an afterthought as you can get. Nothing about this game feels evolutionary.
Sadly enough, the franchise is slipping. [Issue#122, p.73]
Koei didn't change a thing to the Dynasty formula, and it's a shame. It's also unacceptable that the game still suffers from the same technical issues that were already known. This episode is supposed to give a tactical dimension to the series, but it doesn't really gain any gameplay depth.
