Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault is a harrowing new chapter in the critically acclaimed series. Continuing the story in World War II, this exciting campaign places you in the heart of the battle, once described by Churchill as “…undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the War”. This pivotal conflict is known to many as ‘The Battle of the Bulge.
’ Take charge of US Allied forces as they face tactical challenges and punishing terrain during a surprise offensive manoeuvre led by the relentless resurgent Oberkommando West. Watch the dramatic Battle of the Bulge unfold through the eyes of three different Officers; experience first-hand the unique struggles they encounter during the war, and how the weight of your actions will shape their future. The harsh reality of war is that no one is truly safe, and your Companies are not excluded from this ultimate truth.
Bear witness to their heroism in the face of extreme odds, and fight to win control of the strategically critical Ardennes region.
I really doubted the single player campaign in CoH2 could surprise me in any way, but the introduction of the strategic map made Ardennes Assault worthy of even being sold as a separate game. I’m impressed. [01/2015, p.56]
This new addition costs as much as the core game and lacks multiplayer, but if you're happy stomping AI then the long, rewarding campaign will see you right. [Feb 2015, p.79]
As an expansion, The Ardennes Offensive feels a bit expensive for what it is. The campaign missions are well designed, though, and increasing the importance of the individual soldiers is a great addition to the game mechanics. [Jan 2015]
With this new structure Ardennes Assault represents the best single-player experience seen in a Company of Heroes title to date.
COH 2 is steeped in quality : he got rid of unnecessary additions of episode 2 and offers us an intense and gripping single player campaign. The series is back on track.
Relic's latest standalone expansion represents the best elements of real-time and turn-based strategy, making it worth playing for anyone who appreciates the form and likes to see it taken in new directions.
Relic’s attempt to create a more dynamic single player campaign is partially successful, but the systems of company permanence don’t entirely gel with the inflexibility of an Iron Man save system, and the map is light on grand strategy.
