AquaNox is a series of submarine-based shooter/simulation games set in the distant future. The collection includes AquaNox and AquaNox 2: Revelation. The water is no longer calm.
The undersea world has undergone a transformation from tranquil environment to a place of unspeakable violence, graphic murder and horrific danger. It is now the 27th century and mercenaries such as 'Emerald' Dead Eye Flint ply their deadly trade among the warring forces of man and nature. In Aquanox gamers take the role of Flint, taking command of a loosely aligned force of fellow mercenaries who hire themselves out to the powerful leaders of this inhospitable world.
Players fight vicious battles against crazed mercenaries, mighty military forces and hideous sea monsters. The frantic pace never lets up in Aquanox: True adrenaline-rush action for today's gamers. Aquanox 2: Revelation is a new story of the underwater world Aqua.
In 2666 a young freighter pilot called William Drake sets out to search for the heritage of a mythical ancestor. He is looking for adventure - and finds greed, ruthlessness, merciless hatred … and also unexpected help. But very soon he has to realize that he is not the only one hunting for his ancestor's legendary treasure.
If you want an undersea simulation or oceanic real-time strategy, then forget it; but if what you desire is arcade action in a novel and challenging context, then it fits the bill.
Some gamesAquaNox, for exampleseem like they were made up of leftover game parts and assembled in total darkness by a team of deranged, acid-dropping monkeys...What's really crazy is that, oddly enough, it ain't half bad.
If you closed your eyes and managed to drown out the superfluous and oft aggravating German techno you wouldn't for a second know that the game took place underwater. It features none of the ambience, deep bass, and whooshing water associated with the setting.
It should by no means be considered to be a submarine simulation, but rather a simple arcade shoot-em-up, used only for time wasting when you have nothing the least bit intelligent to play.
A bit of a bimbo, pretty but mindless.
Sadly, in addition to the crap voice acting, the games phat/phunky Euro-trash techno beats will have you either tapping your toes or (like me) turning off the music altogether. [Feb 2002, p.80]
The first time you see AquaNox in action, you'll probably be impressed with the bright lights and flashy explosions, but you'll probably tire of those in about five minutes.
