The Gods of Olympus have abandoned humanity, leaving you to perish without their benevolence. Take up arms against the Gods, climb Mount Olympus, and take their divine powers for yourself to ensure mankind’s survival! Apotheon is a fast and brutal 2D action game with a striking art style and heroic narrative based on Ancient Greek Mythology.
The game more than backs up its aesthetic prowess with rewarding combat and exploration systems in place. While the combat hardly changes over the course of the adventure, Apotheon asks the player to apply their knowledge in such a wide variety of ways that it constantly feels fresh and exciting.
Not only is Apotheon a tireless devotion to ancient Greek art and culture, it’s also a damn fun game and one of my surprise early favorites of 2015.
Apotheon is myth alive, it's a beautiful and wonderful indie game with very good ideas, music, characters... The ancient Greeks valued balance and harmony in their art and philosophy, and Alientrap Studios has got just that. Apotheosic.
If it played just a little tighter, Apotheon would be brushing up against greatness. As it stands, it's stunning to look at and a pleasure to play, and what flaws it does have can be easily overlooked by anyone looking for something smart and stylish.
Apotheon eschews modern expectations, reflecting a far older brand of storytelling.
Sadly Apotheon’s gameplay can’t deliver what the wonderful art design promises. Although the mixture of RPG-, Metroidvania- and classic platformer elements are solid and definitely enjoyable, the controls are clunky, the exploration is hardly rewarding and the combat system – while tactical by nature – often dwindles down to button-mashing.
Apotheon looks beautiful, but it loses its charm in mere 15 minutes. The beauty can’t save the shoddy game design.
