Fear the wolves. They are cold, they are hungry - and they will stop at nothing to survive… Ragnarok. Legend has it that when the coldest winter descends, the Jotan will return to take their vengeance against the Gods of Asgard.
The world is on the road to perdition and the fate of Midgard hangs in the balance. But when the Fire and Frost Giants begin to merge their armies, they encounter the clan of the Ulfung – the Wolves of Midgard. It didn’t take long for Vikings to bludgeon those expectations into a meaty, undulating pulp.
Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a very competent entry to action RPG genre with few caveats. Peppered among the well detailed Norse mythology inspired locales are occasional performance issues and a formulaic story. While notable, these do not detract from a fun and satisfying hack and slash experience. It must be hard to challenge a king of the genre like Diablo, but Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a brilliant alternative to the Blizzard giant.
In terms of story and mythology this game is not that exciting. On the other hand, it feels great to overpower big trolls and fat bosses. Vikings Wolves of Midgard is a great game for everyone who wants something other than Diablo.
While a little unpolished, Vikings – Wolves of Midgard is over-the-top fun.
There’s a lot to like in Vikings, even if the game’s never able to effectively articulate how it’s different to the genre’s greats. It manages - just - to be more than a by-the-numbers Diablo clone thanks to the creative energy that went into its bosses and environment design, but it relies too heavily on that, and the assumption that you’ll be playing the game in multiplayer. As a single player experience, the limits on what Vikings can offer become distracting; making it good for a lazy afternoon of grinding fun, but not something that you’ll remember over the longer term.
This title has some good ideas, but it doesn't really shine when executing any of them. It can be a good option if you love the genre, but there are better alternatives out there.
A distinctly below average hack-and-slash game with better examples of the genre already out there.
