Survive ambitious rulers dreaming of an empire, outsmart treacherous neighbors longing to burn your spoils, and navigate the religion’s predictably unreasonable demands; you need ask only one question as you build your legacy – “Will you burn them, or be burnt?.
Overall, Plebby Quest: The Crusades is a deep strategy game with a humorous wrapper to move it along. It was built to seem familiar, sporting a Risk undertone prevalent throughout, but it’s much more than just a simple strategy board game. Much, much more.
PiedPipers Team’s Plebby Quest: The Crusades is a fresh take on the historical strategy sim. It’s fun to conquer land, manipulate relationships, and wage war all in the name of building an empire. The use of humor helps to put a new spin on a formula much in need of some variety. Veterans of the genre may not be as impressed by the offerings in Plebby Quest, but there’s still something for everybody.
It’s basically a historical strategy game, but the nuances and individual sequences within it allow it to ascend beyond that into one of the most entertaining takes on the strategy genre I’ve played in a long time. It’s both very fun to play and very funny, and that’s not an easy thing to manage.
A much more interesting than it seems, while still approachable and cheerful. Plebby Quest is a historical strategy game that doesn´t take itself very seriously, but is worth a crusade. [Issue#303]
I generally enjoyed Plebby Quest: The Crusades. It’s everything I look for in a deep strategy game. It even offers a few facts about the different nations included. That's the sort of thing that’s not needed but adds a lot of detail to the presentation. My main complaint is that the campaigns take a huge time commitment. It would take more time to finish a full game than I reasonably have to play it. But I will be returning time and again to try.
Despite how the game falters with humor throughout the scenario mode, there are a lot of fun gameplay mechanics here. The simplified strategy mechanics make for fast paced and exciting rounds, and interacting with different nations and religions makes for some great situations whether players are starting wars or making alliances. If players can look past its faults, they will find that Plebby Quest is a very solid strategy title.
In spite of these issues, Plebby Quest just about succeeds in what it sets out to do. If you’ve always fancied painting a big map in the colour of WAR, but get intimidated by complex UIs, there are certainly worse places to start. That said, I’d be more inclined to recommend something like the aforementioned Unity Of Command, which cuts right to the heart of large-scale strategy without a single mini-game in sight.
