Command a team of ruthless highway warriors on the gang-infested highways of North America’s wastelands in this RealTimeShift Vehicular Action Strategy reboot of the cult-classic Games Workshop car combat game. An alternative America 2023: too wild to be true, too close for comfort.
The bottom line… there’s not a lot of intellectualising here… grab a car, pick a job, go out and execute the job (or target… well both really). It’s simple fun with a bit of a flair for strategy if you want it. Works great as a pick up and play game too so if you can only spare 10 mins or so (the missions are timed) you can get in a quick task and be off again. Worth your time if you like a bit of road based combat.
The game is loads of fun, but I did occasionally have a tough time with the UI. I get the style they’re going for here with the faint green retro feel, but it just ends up looking clunky and makes it hard to navigate. However, it’s a small price to pay for such a fun game. This one screams badass, and if that’s your style, definitely check out Dark Future.
Dark Future: Blood Red States is a great game for a niche audience interested in a post-apocalyptic single player mix of car combat and rail shooter. The combat is engaging and fun with elements that allow players to make strategic choices.
Dark Future: Blood Red States is a quirky video game adaptation of this niche Games Workshop board game, and Auroch Digital have done a great job of preserving that feel in a real time form. Its bitesized campaigns keep the dystopian road warrior gameplay going, and there's a real charm that manages to shine through, even if there's probably a few too many rough edges and limits to the design.
