Degrees of Separation is a puzzle platformer where cooperation is built into every move. Two contrasting souls, Ember and Rime, fall in love, but are separated by an enigmatic force, and must use their powers to progress through a spectacular world of fantasy and adventure.
With simplistic controls ensuring gameplay is easy to pick up for players of all ages, a smoothly spoken narrative pushing the story along at the perfect pace and plenty of interesting puzzles found throughout, this is one cooperative puzzler that offers a memorable and enjoyable experience.
If you're looking for a fun couch co-op game, then Degrees of Separation is a lovely 2D puzzle platformer that should definitely be experienced. The beautiful hand drawn backdrops, great music, with interesting narrative that cleverly tied into the game mechanics made this a pleasure to play, but at times the platforming and the puzzles can sometimes be frustrating and ruin the fun. At a mere $29.99 CDN, playing Degrees of Separation makes for a cheap (but fun!) date night in with your Player 2.
If controls were better, platforming and puzzles would be a way more pleasing experience, less difficult to complete.
Degrees of Separation presents us with a fascinating idea and a pleasing audio-visual production, but ends up being repetitive too quickly without meaningful evolutions in the formula and design while progressing.
Degrees of Separation opens like a touching fairy tale complete with well-written narration and a soft tone of lovers determined to find one another. Sadly, the game betrays them and the player alike by structuring progression exclusively around collectibles. It results in a world that is pretty and pleasant to look at, but often tedious to move through. Still, it's better in co-op and won't take more than one or two date night sessions to see it all, leaving it a flawed fairy tale, but still one with heart.
Degrees of Separation is definitely not great, but it's not exactly bad either. Instead, it's something potentially worse: forgettable. An intriguing premise is wasted on dull gameplay that never rises above simply being serviceable.
Its technical failures and gameplay shortcomings can not be ignored and ultimately separates the game from the more polished titles offered by its peers.
