The Great Whale Road is a story-driven RPG with turn-based tactics and cards in which you lead a Dark Ages clan in its fight for survival against enemies and a harsh environment. Travel, trade and fight your way along the North Sea to prepare for the coming winter.
If you like RPGs and management, this is a pretty interesting option. It fails when it comes to certain aspects, like the combat, but overall it's very enjoyable.
The Great Whale Road is an adventure made by turn based strategy, RPG and management of an ancient Danish clan, but in almost every respect there is a feeling of lack of depth.
The Great Whale Road should have stayed in development for a few extra months. It would not only fix technical issues, but perhaps they would work more on game elements. Despite all the criticism, it is a game that has something to offer and will find its players.
The Great Whale Road is a good first step for Sunburned Games. Although they fail to achieve a complex game they settle the possibilities for the next campaigns. But, for now, we just have a simply, but nice, game.
For many turn based strategy titles it is the combat that keeps you engaged. The Great Whale Road has some really great writing but ultimately that is not enough to carry the game. The combat is so intensely unrewarding that this is one story I’d rather have read in paperback format.
Even if the developers will fix all the bugs in The Great Whale Road, it will still remain a depressingly boring game.
