Excubitor is an action shooter at its core that challenges the player to strategically control the battlefield whilst using skill based mechanics. The player will have to master three key gameplay features: Offense, Defense and Resource Management. Each level contains strategic locations, allowing the player to build defenses, interact with the environment and change the enemies’ tactics.
The Steam community greenlit Excubitor—and it's apparent why. It's a fun and challenging tower defense game with a twist, steeping you in the action instead of having you just sit back and watching everything unfold.
Fast action and strategy define Excubitor, and the smartly-designed levels and customization options encourage experimentation with the different weapon load-outs. Excubitor is a great action game that deftly mixes two distinct genres into one great new flavor.
A well-executed mashup of two genres that's worth checking out if you're a fan of either.
Frantic gameplay keeps you on the edge of your seat though, and the storyline is engaging enough to give you the motivation to start another mission. The true heroes of the game, however, are the comprehensive boss fights which add flavor where it is needed most.
I must admit that I enjoyed Excubitor in the moments where all the elements pulled together. The core gameplay is solid, and strategizing which weapons and turrets are best for each stage is satisfying when it leads to victory. That being said, the positives never fully counterbalance the ever present gremlins. It’s a struggle to get through the first chapter with limited resources and power. Even if you do, the fiddly targeting and unbalanced numbers are a constant disadvantage that make you feel overwhelmed for most of your playthrough.
As a tower defence shooter hybrid, Excubitor has the potential to be an adrenaline-charged, strategic masterpiece. However, a number of aspects have let the game down and this left me feeling disappointed.
