Day of Defeat: Source features multiplayer, team-based gameplay set in the WWII European theatre of operations. Players choose a role and tackle goal-oriented missions based on historical operations. Day of Defeat: Source takes the classic gameplay of the original Day of Defeat and improves the experience with Source, the advanced engine technology Valve created for "Half-Life 2.
" With this technology, DoD: Source offers state of the art graphics (including support for HDR lighting) in optimized versions of popular maps, plus redesigned sound and all new player, weapon, and world models. New features include: Completely updated maps to take full advantage of the Source engine replaces, integrated physics simulation for ragdolls and physically simulated objects, higher resolution textures throughout, bump mapping, specular lighting, and other graphic effects, all powered by advanced Source engine technology, completely redesigned user interface, all new voice, weapon, and ambient sounds.
Hearing bullets wiz past your head as you hear the crackle of machine gun fire in the background is something that I have yet to experience in any game.
Every bit the great game its predecessor was, and then some.
I think the new DoD has done the best job of utilizing the Source physics engine.
In terms of scale, it barely comes up to Battlefield's ankles, and in terms of tactics and tension it can't beat Counter-Strike, but once you've spent a few hours on a server of 20 or so people, you'd have to want not to enjoy it to fail to - and your own war stories are an inevitable byproduct.
Sound is what makes this game unique however. You’re made very aware of gunshots almost everywhere to varying degrees of loudness.
When all's said and done, this is an old game - an excellent old game and a beautiful old game - but an old game nonetheless. But if you haven't played it before, now's a great time to do so. [PC Zone]
Taken with the limitations of only four maps, on which to play one game type, all too soon you can find yourself in a mechanical rut playing them over and over. And that's something that the original didn't suffer from.
